Small Front Entry Refresh Without Buying Anything

A few weeks ago, I started a small front entry refresh after our front area began looking messy and neglected. The crotons we had planted there died during the winter, weeds had taken over, and the whole space made the front of the house look untidy.
At first, I thought about planting something new. However, we had foundation issues in the past, and we were told to be careful about watering too close to the house. Clemson Home & Garden Information Center notes that watering plants close to a house foundation can create moisture problems, which made me feel better about choosing a simpler solution instead of replanting.
So instead of spending money, I decided to clean everything out and work with what we already had.
Why I Changed This Front Area

This small bed sits right in front of our porch, so it is one of the first things people see. I finally reached the point where I wanted to stop looking at the weeds and dead plants every time I walked up to the house.
The plants were gone, the weeds were everywhere, and the lava rock looked scattered and buried. It just felt unfinished.
Because of the foundation concerns, I did not want to add plants that would need regular watering. University of Illinois Extension also advises homeowners to keep drainage moving away from the foundation, which made me even more careful about how I wanted to use this space.
That is when I decided this area did not need more plants. It just needed a clean reset.
What I Used for This Small Front Entry Refresh
The best part of this project is that I did not need to buy anything new.
I reused:
- the lava rocks
- pavers we already had in the backyard
- landscape fabric
- landscape pins
That made this project feel even better. I was able to improve the look of the front of our house without spending extra money.
Before the Cleanup
Before I started, the area looked rough. The plants were dead, the weeds were growing everywhere, and the bed looked more like a forgotten patch than part of our front porch.
It bothered me every time I walked up to the house.
I am glad I took before photos because the difference feels much bigger when I look at them side by side.

How I Did the Small Front Entry Refresh
First, I pulled out the dead plants and weeds. That alone made a big difference. I also used a small hand weeder tool to pull weeds along the edges of the front bed and from the cracks in the walkway. It worked really well in those tight spaces and helped the whole front area look much cleaner.

Next, I cleaned up the bed and worked through the old lava rock. Some of it had sunk into the dirt over time, so I had to rake and gather it back into place.

After that, I laid down the landscape fabric where I needed it. Then I used the landscape pins to hold it in place.

Finally, I set the pavers in place first and made sure they were straight before doing anything else. After that, I poured the lava rock back around them. Since we already had the pavers at home, it was an easy way to make the space look more polished and put together.

Once everything was in place, the whole area looked cleaner right away.
Small Front Entry Refresh Results

The change was simple, but it made such a difference.
Instead of looking overgrown and neglected, the front area now looks neat and pulled together. The lava rock gives it texture, and the pavers help break up the space in a practical way.
More than anything, it looks cared for now.
I also like that this solution works for our situation. Since I do not want to water close to the house, this gives me a cleaner and lower-maintenance option.
What I Like Most About This Project
What I love most is that this project was realistic.
It was not fancy. It was not expensive. I did not go out and buy a whole new setup. I simply cleaned up a messy space and reused what we already had.
Those are the kinds of home projects I enjoy most. They make a visible difference, but they still feel doable.
Sometimes a space does not need a full makeover. Sometimes it just needs attention.
A Few Things I Learned
This little project reminded me of a few things.
First, using what I already have can still create a nice result.
Second, even a small area can affect how the whole front of the house feels.
And finally, simple changes can be enough. I did not need to plant anything new to make this space look better.
Final Thoughts on My Small Front Entry Refresh
This small front entry refresh was one of those simple projects that made me feel so accomplished. It took a messy and neglected area and turned it into something much cleaner and easier to maintain.
I also love that it cost me nothing because I reused the materials we already had at home.
It may not be a huge makeover, but it made the front of our house feel more welcoming again. And honestly, that was exactly what I wanted.
