Washington DC Day 4 Itinerary: National Mall & A Quiet Ending

Our Washington DC Day 4 itinerary turned out to be one of the most emotional and reflective days of our trip. It was not packed with as many stops as I originally planned, but it gave us moments I will never forget.
That morning felt different. We knew it was our last full day, so we wanted to make the most of it, even though the weather was still cold and very windy.
Walking Through the National Mall

We started our day at the National Mall, one of the most iconic places in Washington, DC.
The open space, lined with monuments and memorials, felt even bigger than I imagined. Even with the wind, people were still walking around, taking photos, and quietly taking everything in.
First, we stopped at the World War II Memorial.

This part was very special to me.
As I walked around the memorial, I noticed that the Philippines was included, which immediately caught my attention. Seeing my home country represented there made me pause for a moment.

At that point, I couldn’t help but think of my father, who was a U.S. WWII veteran. Seeing the memorial and knowing he was part of that history made everything feel more personal and emotional.
It reminded me that these places are not just landmarks—they represent real people, real families, and real sacrifices.
A Moment at the Lincoln Memorial

From there, we made our way to the Lincoln Memorial.
Climbing those steps felt surreal.

Once we reached the top, the view overlooking the Reflecting Pool was just beautiful. Even with the gray sky, it still felt powerful standing there. There is something about that place that makes you stop and reflect.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial: A Quiet, Emotional Stop

One of the most emotional parts of our day was visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Seeing the names on the wall was overwhelming.
I found myself slowing down, reading some of the names, and thinking about the lives behind each one. These were real people who sacrificed everything.
It was quiet, and people around us were very respectful. Some were touching the wall, others were just standing still.
That moment stayed with me.
Running Out of Time on the National Mall
At that point, I realized we were starting to run out of time.
There was still so much more to see on the other side of the National Mall. I originally planned to explore more museums and monuments, but we had to make a decision.
Instead of rushing, we chose to head to one place my husband had really been looking forward to.
A Warm Escape: US Botanic Garden

We went straight to the United States Botanic Garden.
The moment we walked inside, everything changed.
After being out in the cold wind all day, stepping into the warm, humid air felt so comforting. It honestly felt like entering a completely different world.

The plants were beautiful and so well maintained. There were tropical sections, desert plants, and so many unique flowers.
We ended up staying there for about 2 to 3 hours, just walking slowly and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
If you are visiting Washington, DC, I highly recommend adding this to your list. It is also a great place to warm up if the weather is not cooperating.
Plans Changed (And That’s Okay)
Originally, I had more plans for the afternoon.
I wanted to grab a bite at We the Pizza and then visit the National Gallery of Art.
But by that time, I started to feel really tired.
Honestly, I wasn’t feeling well at all.
Instead of pushing through, we decided to head back to the hotel. Looking back, I think that was the right decision.
Ending the Day Back at the Hotel
That evening was quiet.
We ordered dinner instead of going out, which felt like the best choice at the time. I rested for a couple of hours, and then I started packing for our early flight the next morning.
There was something bittersweet about packing.
On one hand, I felt a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see everything I had planned. There were still so many museums and places left on my list.
But at the same time, I felt grateful.
We were able to experience so much in just a few days.
